5.25.12, Day 2 - Delfest, Cumberland MD

Friday we took time to check out the vendors at Delfest, which have been awesome the two years I’ve went. Pottery, photography, jewelry, and clothing, most of which me and my cousin purchased while we were there. We also took in some of the Bluegrass Band Competition. We really enjoyed the Halftime String Band from Morgantown, WV.

After that we watched The David Mayfield Parade. Boy was that a show. David comes out in the crowd before he even gets on stage, and somehow manages to hoist himself up on the stage, after a few failed attempts. He rocked out with Trapped Under the Ice, which I really enjoyed, then went on to crack up the audience with his antics & jokes. I also really enjoyed the duet with Rebekah Jean, Dim Lights and Thick Smoke. Very awesome performance.

In the evening we caught some of the Del McCoury Band’s set, which is always fun. Del is such a neat and funny guy. I could watch him all day.

We watched Yonder Mountain String Band do their thing from the Grandstand. I’ve seen Yonder several times, and this show seemed similar to their other shows. They always bring energy and good tunes.

Day 1:

After lugging all of our stuff to our campsite and setting up camp, it was about time to checkout some music. We first saw Split Lip Rayfield.

That is a gas tank. It was pretty cool.

Next up was one of my primary motivators for going to Delfest, The Devil Makes Three. They were awesome just as I’d hoped. I’ve listened to these guys for a while so they were on my list of bands to see. The original bass player wasn’t there because of a broken arm I believe. 4.20.12 - The Avett Brothers, Creative Arts Center, Morgantown WV

Ahh fave town, fave band. It doesn’t get much better. This is the smallest venue I’ve seen them in at 1500 people. It sold out in 20 minutes. Thank goodness I was able to score 6 tickets in Row N for me and my friends. The seats were awesome! It was really hot in there though. The crowd was good considering it was a party-college town, plus no alcohol was served so that kept folks less belligerent.

The rock-out on Head Full of Doubt kept it fresh for me even though I’ve seem them perform it a lot. I also really had fun during Colorshow. I Would Be Sad was amazing! I also loved In the Curve and Closer Walk with Thee. OH and Please Pardon Yourself!! LOVE that song so much and I’m so glad they played it. Living of Love-also amazing. Laundry Room, Traveling Song, Talk on Indolence… I mean if I don’t stop here I’ll end up listing every song they played.

They showed a lot of love for West Virginia and Morgantown, which I’m a sucker for. We West Virginians take a lot of pride in our state, so I get tickled pink when those I admire enjoy it here.

My boyfriend, my cousin, and I all went to Delfest for the first time in 2010. The Avett Brothers were headlining along with Yonder Mountain String Band and Dave Rawlings Machine. Other highlights were Trampled by Turtles, Keller Williams & Friends, Cornmeal. The vendors at Delfest were awesome… glass jewelry, clothing, artwork… the most stuff I’ve bought from festival vendors. Here’s some pics and vids from Friday’s shows.

The Avett Brothers, Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, 2-24-10, Athens, OH

This was my first Avett Brothers show. An hour from my hometown, but 7 hours from where I was residing… on a Wednesday night I believe. Quite the leap of faith to see a band… but my boyfriend and I drove from Northern VA to Eastern OH to see this show with my cousin, who lived in Athens at the time. I’ve fallen in love with Athens since this show… it’s a cool little town. The Low Anthem opened.
